Sewing New Possibilities

The Sewing Centre was established in 2022 to provide sewing and tailoring training to women in the DRC community. The first group of eight women graduated from the programme and each received a sewing machine to help start their own home-based businesses. However, limited access to electricity in the informal settlement remains a challenge.

With the support of local tourism companies, four women were able to return to the project and secure stable employment. Today, they create tote bags, laundry bags, school bags, and a variety of handmade products for the tourism market.

Wanting to give back to their community, the women also design and produce school uniforms for the Grow Together Kindergarten. Income generated from product sales is reinvested into the project, helping to cover the costs of servicing machines, purchasing materials, and providing the tools needed for these talented women to continue developing their skills and creativity.

DRC Women’s Community Project is there to empower women so they can generate a small income and lead and thrive in their local environments.

Hope in Creating

In 2010, the Bead Empowerment Programme was established to provide women in the DRC community with skills and income-generating opportunities. More than 20 women have been, and continue to be, trained in creating a variety of handcrafted bead products, including keyrings, jewellery, Christmas decorations, and other unique items.

These products are sold through Kubatsirana Helping Hands, enabling the women to earn an income to help cover their daily living expenses and support their children. With unemployment rates remaining high and many households caring for five or more children, many women face significant challenges in providing essential necessities such as food, nappies, school uniforms, and other basic needs.

The programme was created to empower women by offering them a sustainable source of income. Participants are paid monthly for the products they create, allowing them to contribute to their household expenses and improve their families' quality of life. The profit generated from the sale of each item is reinvested into the programme to purchase beads, thread, needles, and other materials required to continue production, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the initiative.
